UDOT REGION ONE DIRECTOR VISITS I-15 AND 1800 N INTERCHANGE PROJECT

SUNSET, Utah — The Utah Department of Transportation visited the I-15 interchange project at 1800 North last Wednesday to host a construction media event announcing 152 new and ongoing construction projects across the state.

Rob Wight, UDOT Region One director, led the event and fielded questions from the media.

Construction on the new I-15 interchange at 1800 North began March 17. The project is a joint venture between Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction and Whitaker Construction. Current work includes clearing debris and driving piles to support a new I-15 bridge over 1800 North.

“These are both accesses to the base, which is a big part of northern Utah,” Wight told the Standard-Examiner. “Hill Air Force Base is the number one employer in this part of the state — a lot of folks getting on to the base at the same time then leaving about the same time. This will help facilitate that on-and-off base traffic and help us to be better for those folks.”

The interchange is part of a broader effort to improve transportation in the Clinton area. Future phases include widening 1800 North to 2000 West, constructing an overpass at 500 West to cross the railroad tracks, and creating a new entrance on the west side of Hill Air Force Base. Doing so will ease congestion on nearby interchanges caused by the 5600 South project and improve access to and from the base.

“It’s not only north-south traffic that’s important; it’s also east-west, and this is going to be a benefit to the cities of Clinton and Sunset, Roy and Clearfield that are close here,” Wight told the Standard-Examiner. “It’s important to establish a grid so that there’s lots of options for travel, so 1800 North and 5600 South will both be east-west corridors that can accommodate more traffic.”

The project is scheduled for completion in fall 2027.
