Salt Lake City International Airport Concourse Tunnel and Deep Foundations

Salt Lake City, UT

DETAILS

Scope: RLW has been a key subcontractor on the Terminal Redevelopment Program since 2016 through several consecutive contracts. This work has included civil work, deep foundations, and concrete for major landside and airside components at the 290-acre site.

Innovation: Part of RLW’s work included extending an existing concrete tunnel to provide passenger connectivity between terminals. A significant challenge arose when the design team calculated that the dewatering efforts would cause the tunnel to settle, putting the structure at risk. RLW developed a driven pile solution for both sides of the tunnel, with beams on top of the pile to span the tunnel and connect to the tunnel lid, and hydraulic jacks that allowed this system to compensate for settlement.

Value Metrics

  • 5,800 piles driven

  • Poured concrete decks for the 2,500 lineal ft. Arrivals bridge within 6 ft. of the glass “skin” of the new terminal
  • Zero unplanned impacts to airport operations
