Bangerter Highway Interchanges at 4700 S., 13400 S., 9800 S., and 2700 W.

Salt Lake County, UT

DETAILS

Scope: Through two concurrent contracts, RLW is converting four intersections on Bangerter Highway, a critical urban arterial street carrying an average of 60,000 vehicles per day, into freeway-style interchanges.

Innovation: The original designs for 13400 S. and 4700 S. required major impacts to businesses and adjacent parcels. Using design-build delivery and progressive design-build delivery methods, RLW, UDOT, and the design team reduced right-of-way needs, stakeholder impacts, and project funds. A key challenge was relocating 3,000 ft. of 66-inch aqueduct. RLW helped optimize the design of the relocation and used early packaging to mitigate this project schedule risk. Crews used jack-and-bore methods to install the aqueduct under the roadway while minimizing traffic disruptions.

Value Metrics

  • Use of recycled concrete to reduce construction waste
  • Preloaded embankment areas to reduce settlement risk
  • Eliminated more than 80,000 square ft. in stakeholder impacts through design process
  • Revised phasing concepts to reduce closures and traffic impacts
